Monday 25-26th May 1998
Rex Weedon

SAN CARLOS
The sky is clear and the sun is shining but the temperature is still below normal. We loaded the last of the provisions onto La Marquise, a MacGregor 26, and made ready for our crossing.   After a last minute run to the store we finally cast off and get under way.
We leave San Carlos inner marina at 13:16 local time.  After clearing the harbor entrance we set course for San Juanico.
The heading is 180° the wind is out of the NNW about 8 knots and steady the sea is calm running about 2 to 3 ft.  Dulcinea, our cruising companion is just off our stern.   This is their first crossing so we need to stay in sight of them.

16:00 Hr. GPS position N 27° 45.47’ W 111° 03.76’ Heading 180° Wind 8-10 knots and dropping Sea calm  Dulcinea dropping further behind.   Contacted Dulcinea, suggest they change up to a 150 jib.

GPS position N 27° 35.47’ W 111° 03.86’ Heading 173° Wind 8 knots and steady Sea flat calm speed 4 -5 knots  The boat is sailing well inspite of all the cruising gear we loaded on board.  Dulcinea has court up and off our port quarter.  Contacted Dulcinea, to confirm position, they report everything fine and going good

20:00 Hr. GPS position N 27° 27.90’ W 111° 06.30’ Heading 198° Wind 6 knots and steady Sea flat calm speed 4 knots We are rigged for night sailing, life jackets and safety harnesses clipped in.  Dulcinea still off our port quarter. Contacted Dulcinea, to confirm position, they report everything fine and are rigged for night sailing.

23:00 Hr. GPS position N 27° 16.09’ W 111° 11.29’ Heading 184° Wind 5 knots and steady Sea flat calm speed 4 knots The sky is clear and the stars are shinning bright.  Dulcinea still off our port quarter. Contacted Dulcinea, to confirm position, they report everything fine and are enjoying the night sky   Everything is running smooth, the boat is sailing well.

11:15 Hr. GPS position N 26° 28.22’ W 111° 24.91’ Heading 177° Wind light, Sea flat calm speed 5 knots. San Juanico clearly in sight approx. 6nm.

11:46 Hr. GPS position N 26° 25.83’ W 111° 24.91’ 4nm off San Juanico
GPS position N 26° 24.79’ W 111° 24.78’ 3nm off San Juanico
GPS position N 26° 23.72’ W 111° 24.64’ 2nm off San Juanico
San Juanico Bay GPS position N 26° 22.27’ W 111° 25.84’

13:37 Hr. Anchored in San Juanico inner bay. Low tide depth about 5 Ft. over sand, well protected anchorage. We set a bow and stern anchors which allowed us to anchor closer to the shore. The shore line is mainly sand with some small rocks at the water line.

A word of caution: Check the fuel can to ensure you have enough to motor to your anchorage. We didn’t and the motor stopped at the most inappropriate time, luckily Dulcinea came along side and we passed them a line and were towed to our final anchorage.

This Was found hanging on the tree of knowledge in San Juanico Bay

Now is all the time you own, and no man knows the hour just when the clock of life will stop—at late or early hour. The futures just a dream of hope the past a distant link.
Go cruising now my brother it’s later than you think
